We’ve worked with a lot of Ortho-K patients here at Contact Lens Institute of Delaware, and we’ve seen how consistent care can make a real difference—not just in how your vision holds up during the day, but also in your long-term eye health. Whether you're new to Ortho-K or just need a refresher, let’s go over what it really takes to keep your lenses (and your eyes) in great shape.
Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K for short, is a non-surgical vision correction method that uses specially designed gas permeable contact lenses worn overnight. While you sleep, these lenses gently reshape the surface of your cornea—the clear front part of your eye—so that when you wake up and remove the lenses, you can see clearly throughout the day without needing glasses or daytime contacts. It’s especially popular among people with myopia (nearsightedness), including children and teens who may benefit from its ability to slow the progression of myopia over time.
Before handling your lenses, wash your hands with non-moisturizing soap and dry them with a lint-free towel. Oils and residues from lotions or creams can coat your lenses and interfere with their performance.
Ortho-K lenses need daily cleaning and disinfecting—no shortcuts. After removing your lenses in the morning, gently clean them with the solution recommended by your doctor. Rub them with your fingers (clean hands, always!) to remove debris, then rinse and store them in fresh solution. Never reuse solution. Always use fresh solution each time you store your lenses.
These lenses are designed to reshape your cornea, which means they’re precise and a bit more delicate than traditional lenses. Avoid abrasive scrubbing or using products not designed for gas permeable lenses. If your lens case or solution has any crusty buildup or gunk, it’s time for a refresh. That also means changing your lens case regularly—every 1–3 months is a good rule of thumb.
Regular eye exams are essential for anyone using Ortho-K lenses to ensure ongoing eye health and treatment effectiveness. These exams allow your optometrist to check for any changes in corneal shape, ensure proper lens fit, and catch early signs of complications like dry eye, infection, or corneal staining. Regular visits also help evaluate how well your vision is being maintained and whether adjustments to your treatment plan are needed.
Taking good care of your Ortho-K lenses doesn’t just help them last longer—it helps you get the best possible results each day. With a consistent routine and a little attention to detail, you’ll protect your eye health, enjoy clear, comfortable vision, and get the most out of your investment.
